The MEI Foundation Mentor Program

The Foundation is currently working with 5 photographers in the northern part of Syria. The goal is to train these photographers so that they can better share their stories with the world. With generous support from our donors, Middle East Images Foundation provides unique opportunities and an outlet for young, talented photographers and journalists in the region to share their images and stories with the world.

I. Education

This can be especially important in countries where access to education and professional development opportunities may be limited, or where media freedom and freedom of expression may be restricted. By providing these opportunities, the Middle East Images Foundation can help to build the capacity of photographers and journalists in the region, enabling them to better share their stories with the world and contribute to public debate and discourse. This can also help to support the development of a vibrant and diverse media landscape in the Middle East and North Africa, which can be crucial for promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.

Citizen journalism, or the practice of ordinary individuals using the tools of journalism to report on and document events and issues in their communities, can contribute to cultural progress and mutual understanding by giving a voice to diverse and often marginalized perspectives. In the Middle East and North Africa, citizen journalism can be an especially important tool for promoting cultural understanding because it can help to shed light on issues and perspectives that may not be covered by mainstream media

II. Workshops

The Middle East Images Foundation provides online workshops to educate citizen journalists and build bridges between them and the world’s most prominent news and photo agencies. These online workshops can be a powerful tool for providing educational and professional development opportunities to photographers and journalists in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in countries where access to such opportunities may be limited.

One of the key advantages of online workshops is that they can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. This can be especially useful in the Middle East and North Africa, where physical access to educational resources and opportunities may be limited due to geographic, economic, or political constraints. By offering online workshops, the Foundation can help to overcome these barriers and provide photographers and journalists with access to high-quality training and resources.

The Foundation’s online workshops for citizen journalists cover a wide range of topics, including photojournalism, storytelling, ethics, and social media. These workshops can help to build the skills and knowledge of citizen journalists, enabling them to share their stories and perspectives with the world through high-quality visual storytelling. The Foundation also provides workshops on how to connect with and pitch to major news and photo agencies, helping to build bridges between citizen journalists and the professional media industry.

III. Citizen Journalism

Citizen journalism can play a role in improving democracy in the war-torn Middle East by providing a platform for individuals to share their stories and perspectives with the world, and by promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. In countries where traditional media may be controlled or censored by the government, citizen journalism can provide an alternative source of information and a way for individuals to hold their leaders accountable.

By providing educational opportunities for budding photographers and journalists in the Middle East and North Africa, the Middle East Images Foundation can help to build the capacity of citizen journalists in the region, enabling them to better share their stories and perspectives with the world. This can help to promote public discourse and debate and can contribute to the development of more democratic and inclusive societies.

By providing citizen journalist in marginalized communities, with the tools and resources they need to document and share their stories safely and effectively, the MEI Foundation can help to ensure that their voices are heard, even in the most dangerous and challenging circumstances.

Citizen journalism has the potential to play a valuable role in improving democracy in the war-torn Middle East by promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance, and by providing a platform for individuals to share their stories and perspectives with the world.
